Train Ride From Hell
Today was not a good commute for those working in Toronto. We knew bad weather was coming our way. We were expecting snow, freezing rain, and white outs. What we weren't expecting was a major train derailment east of the city.
I left my meeting early so I could meet the 3:33 train home.
When I got to Union Station it was a madhouse. There were hundreds of people milling about; all of them trying to do the same thing as me.
The sign said that all the trains were delayed. ARGH
Even though you are not supposed to go up to the platform, I was worried that when a train came I wouldn't get on so I took my chance on the normal platform.
I was in luck. A train finally pulled in and I got on. The announcer said it was going to Burlington - yeah.
It was so crowded. Thank goodness I am not claustrophobic or I would go nuts.
One of the guys standing in the aisle had a long piece of metal piping. Oh no - I so hoped he wouldn't go all psycho and start swinging that baby!
We headed west. We didn't get far though. Inexplicably the train stopped and we sat there.
and sat there . . . .
Finally pipe man got cranky and started saying the most horrid racist comments about black people. The guy beside me was black. Oh my, it was nasty.
Finally pipe man gets off of the train.
We carry on, about 35 minutes late but we're going in the right direction so I relax.
We stop in Oakville.
We are all told to get off the train because the conductor has just been told to head east. We all herd out onto the platform in the snow. ARGH
Twenty minutes later another train shows up and we are told to get on. Unfortunately it is already full.
We all impersonate sardines and stuff in. Off we go.
By the time I made it home I had been commuting for three hours. I can't believe how cranky people were getting - it isn't as if the derailment was predicted, or planned. They were so angry. After awhile I thought that I would scream - far too much negativity.
It was so nice to sit in front of the fireplace with a glass of wine.
