Yesterday Paul and I spent the day racing around doing errands. It was one of those days that threatened to overwhelm if you stopped long enough to think about it.
One thing that we did stop and think about was that yesterday was the one year anniversary of our arrival in Athens. Trips never seem to end . . . as long as there are photos to view or memories to share they just go on and one (not unlike Betty White).
Because we couldn't be in Greece yesterday we did the next best thing - we went to the Danforthin Toronto and purchased some of our favourite Greek treats. The other name for the Danforth is Greektown. Sure, you'll find the odd sushi spot but the shops and restaurants are predominantly Greek. You'll hear Greek spoken. Greek music will be played in the shops. It really a good substitute since our travel account has been depleted by renovations.
We decided upon a Greek feast for dinner (how did you know food would be a focus? *smile*)
We started off with assorted mezze:
tzatziki, skordila, marinated feta, marinated olives, spanikopita (made in a giant coil), roasted peppers stuffed with cheese and herbs, shrimp baked with tomatoes and feta, stuffed grape leaves, and pita bread.
About an hour later the main course was ready - pastitsio - baked pasta with a delicious meat sauce, covered with bechamel and cheese. MMMMM We had planned on serving a green salad with it but the lettuce had gone 'icky' (icky being the technical term, don't you know) so we whipped together a greek farmers salad and served it with the pastitisio.

We enjoyed a delicions red wine from the Nemea wine region which is SW of Athens.

We did not make dessert - instead we picked up some baklava and pastries at our favourite bakery in Greektown (thanks for showing it to me Liz).

It was a perfect way to remember our trip . . . and to plan another one!
