As many of you know I commute to work. I don't do this for environmental reasons nor do I do this for pocketbook reasons. I do this because of convenience. While I love driving, I really don't like having to leave home at 6 am to beat traffic and then to have to leave the office at 2:30 to do that same. The good thing about the commuting is that it is less expensive for me, it is convenient, and having one less gas-guzzling SUV on the road is a great thing too.
On my commute I meet up with some rather people/situations/bizarre things though.
Today's . . .
It was raining on the platform. I felt pleased that I had remembered my umbrella because normally I forget it. When I went to open up the umbrella it unfortunately popped off of the 'stick' and flew through the air 'attacking' the woman in front of me on the platform. Clearly this was bad on a bunch of levels: a favourite umbrella (stylish, small, expensive, and practical) was no more. I would get wet. I caused distress to the woman on the platform who had thought someone was attacking her.
The positive side of this was that I provided great amusement to the others on the platform; viewing someone's awkward social moment does have a habit of doing that!
On the train things did not get better.
The woman across from me was an 'eater'. Now I can understand why people who catch a train at 7 am might need to eat their breakfast on the train but generally it isn't messy. This woman was a disaster. Somehow she flipped her yogurt on to the woman sitting beside me who wasn't amused at the addition to her clothing. I was though. My amusement ended when the 'eater's' banana peel ended up on my shoe. ARGH
Then the woman across the aisle started talking on her cell phone. Now again, I have no trouble with folk using their cell phones on the train so long as they are respectful. With this character things started off OK but went downhill fast. Her conversation appeared to be with a partner/spouse with whom she was separating from/breaking up with. There were tears, yelling, and far more intimate details of their sex lives than anyone wanted to know. Finally the person beside her asked her to be thoughtful of those around her. They started to fight.
By the time the rain got into the city I was thrilled to be off and actually wishing I had been in my car! ARGH
