This weekend the town of Savannah will serve as the backdrop for Slow Travelers everywhere to gather, connect, and have fun together. This will be the largest GTG in the history of Slow Travel, and will be an opportunity to spend time with good friends you've met before and to connect with others in person for the very first time. Of course, there will be several parties!
Our weekend will include three casual group events, all covered by a small registration fee. Each event will be held at a different, unique Savannah location … definitely not conference hotels! We're having great food, including some "low country" cuisine of the Georgia/South Carolina coast.
In addition to these three big events, there will be several small group activities and excursions that members organized to enable Slow Travelers to explore Savannah together. Here's a preview of what's planned for our Gathering weekend. . .
Friday Evening (6 - 10)
The weekend begins with a kickoff party at the Gingerbread House. This is the perfect intimate setting to begin our time together in historic Savannah.
We'll enjoy a heavy hors d'oeurves buffet, catered by noted chef Cynthia Creighton-Jones (apparently Paula Deen wasn't available), will include several Savannah specialities. An open bar will be available most of the night.
The Gingerbread House is located in the Victorian District near Forsyth Park. Built in 1899, it is one of the most photographed historic homes in Savannah. Our group will enjoy the entire house, including the enclosed courtyard garden.
Saturday Evening (6 - 10)
We'll have Fun at the Fort this evening at Old Fort Jackson, located on a lovely spot on the banks of the Savannah River about three miles from the Historic District. This evening will hold some special surprises, including music, entertainment and a drawing for door prizes. Dinner at the Fort features a Low Country Boil and other local specialities, with beer and wine included. Our group will travel to the Fort by trolley, with pick-up at several locations in the Historic District.
Slow Travel will have private use of this historical fort, including access to the museum area. The current Fort Jackson was built in 1808, but there has been a fort at this location since the Revolutionary War. The facility is now operated by a non-profit organization, and proceeds from all events support education and restoration.
Take a virtual tour of Fort Jackson.
Sunday Brunch (10:30 - 12:30)
We'll come together one last time for Sunday brunch at Vic's on the River. In addition to typical breakfast items, our brunch will include some Savannah specialties.
Vic's is located in an old cotton warehouse in the Historic District, overlooking the Savannah River, an easy walk from our recommended hotels and B&Bs. Our group will have the entire 5th floor, a perfect spot to end our weekend together
