It has been awhile since I have featured a drink . . .do I have a treat for you!
It’s frigid outside, and now you don’t even have the holidays to look forward to.A new year has arrived, bringing with it at least two months of bitter cold, miserly sunlight, and rampant illness. Good God! How can one possibly summon one’s reserves of optimism to cope with it?
Step one: mix yourself up a Sage Brown Derby.
Step two: drink it.
Step three: repeat as needed. (Within reason, of course.)
The grapefruit juice, agave syrup, and sage in this cocktail make it a spicy, complex line of defense against seasonal affective disorder—but what really does the trick, obviously, is the rye, which will strengthen your core more than a marathon session at the gym. Winter is long, but your spirits, in every sense of the word, will be high.
Sage Brown Derby
2 oz rye whiskey (I used White Rye from Dillon's- the hottest distillery around these parts)
1 oz fresh red or pink grapefruit juice (I used red)
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
1/4 oz agave syrup
2 oz orange bitters (Dillon's also makes a wonderful line of bitters)
Sage leaf, for garnish
In a shaker filled with ice, add the whiskey, grapefruit and lime juices, agave and bitters.
Shake, shake, shake and strain into a chilled martini glass.
Slap the sage leaf between your palms a couple of times until it's fragrant and float on top of the drink.
