In close to 10 visits to the Bay area we have never ventured across the bay to Sausalito. A popular residential area, this waterside city famously has a large number of striking houseboats. Our visit on Monday was an impromptu thing - we were leaving Muir Woods and thinking it was time for lunch. Someone said . . . "let's go to Sausalito . . ." and off we went.
Once we had parked our first order of business was lunch. We wandered around a bit and finally decided upon the Spinnaker.
Perched on stilts out on the water, The Spinnaker makes the most of its surroundings. The panoramic views of the San Francisco skyline are breathtaking, and the restaurant even claims they have the best view in the San Francisco Bay Area! Patrons who can tear themselves away from the views long enough to look at the menu will find plenty of seafood options, like clam chowder and crab cakes, as well as heartier options like pasta and steak.
Indeed, it was a challenge to pull ourselves away from that view!
Nonetheless, we were hungry so we did. :-) Paul ordered a crab and shrimp club sandwich. I ordered the baja shrimp and chips.
It was a great lunch - the restaurant is definitely 'old school' set up for service as if were back in the 1950s but the food featured fresh seafood prepared in delicious ways so we were happy as clams (pun intended).
After we were full and able to pull ourselves away from the gorgeous views we paid the bill and headed out to explore this seaside town. It was quickly apparent that the town is a playground for the wealthy - we wouldn't be doing a lot of shopping here.
Shopping bans aside, there was much to see in this beautiful town.
Sausalito's sister city is Viña del Mar which is located on the coast of Chile not far from Santiago. Sausalito's main plaza is named Viña del Mar in honor of the Chilean city and features a beautiful fountain and statues honoring the sister city.
While I was walking along the waterfront I was amazed at this artist - he was building these sculptures out of stones. Each piece was selected carefully and balanced just so so that the piece defied gravity and stood upright. I watched him work for some time before it was time to move on . . .
Speaking of moving on . .. after a busy morning of hiking in Muir woods followed by an awesome afternoon in Sausalito it was now time to head back to our house in San Francisco.
Gorgeous, all of it. Love your description of the restaurant's 50's style, sometimes I just think that part is so much fun, and sometimes I just wonder what makes them keep it so. Good food is good food, however! Sounds like you are having a great time!

Good food and great service - I haven't seen a place all set up with service centres distributed throughout the restaurant to assist the servers in years. They even brought the food out in a giant heated cart.
