Canadians recognize Remembrance Day, originally called Armistice Day, every 11 November at 11 a.m. It marks the end of hostilities during the First World War and an opportunity to recall all those who have served in the nation’s defense.
Today I think of my grandfather who served in the First World. I remember how he would take his gas mask out and show it to us when we were kids. He never put it on though. Grandpa was a sapper or combat engineer. Most of his work was in building railway lines to the front to deliver equipment and materials. When we were kids he never much spoke about the war unless we asked a specific question. Later he would speak of a few stories but always the focus was away from the fighting. Now that I am adult I think I have a better understanding of why that was.
