Our friends traveling in Venice posted a picture on FB of a cocktail they were enjoying - a Hugo. The drink looked very refreshing. Even though it was breakfast here in Canada I turned to google and wouldn't you know we had all of the ingredients (yes, even elderflower syrup AND liqueur - you can use one or the other. How is that for a well stocked bar? :-))
Apparently the Hugo was The IT Drink in Europe last summer.
We North Americans can be behind the times!
The word Hugo is a derivative of the old high German word 'hugu', meaning 'mind', 'heart', and 'spirit'. The cocktail is believed to have been originated in Tyrol, the western part of Austria famous worldwide for its ski resorts. It is refreshing and light, similar in look and taste to the already popular mojito.
Last night (after I picked Paolo up at work - no drinking and driving for me) I made myself a Hugo cocktail. All I can say is YUMMMMMMM I think I have a new drink of the summer.
The Hugo
1 shot elderberry syrup (or St. Germain liqueur)
2-3 slices lime
2 pieces mint
5 ounces prosecco
3 ounces mineral water
ice
Place mint leaves in a wine glass. Use muddler and mash mint lightly.
Add limes and ice cubes.
Add prosecco, mineral water and elderberry syrup.
Stir and enjoy!
