A number of years ago we finished a trip to Italy with 4 days in Torino. We had spent three weeks in the country traveling from Naples to Tuscany to Piemonte. By the time we got to Torino we were a bit pooped. When we arrived the city was quiet. Fall 'looked' differently than it did at home but the signs were there . . .
Now that Pail is no longer working weekends we have a bit more time to do things together. We were expected to get torrential rain Saturday night through Sunday morning so we figured we had better get out and explore on Saturday while the exploring was still dry.
We went to a waterfront park that we used to visit often when I lived in Hamilton. Upon arrival we discovered that it was the location of two cross country running races - one was a bit more competitive than the other. The first was the Ontario University Cross Country finals. The other race was a community race where people dressed up in Halloween costumes.
After wandering the park (and avoiding getting in the middle of a race), we headed to a restaurant I've wanted to visit for awhile - the Saltlick Smokehouse. This is not a place for vegetarians. The menu is full of glorious meat options - all slowly grilled over hardwood or lightly battered and fried. This is considered to be one of the best BBQ restaurants in the area.
We both ordered sandwiches with three sides - cole slaw, mac and cheese, and baked beans. The food was amazing - and the portions huge. I'll be having my leftovers today for lunch!
If you are out for lunch or dinner in the James Street area of Hamilton, stop in to Saltlick. The food is delicious, and the service is friendly.
Tomorrow is election day in Canada. The campaign has been notable for its nastiness and for how close the popular vote. Frankly, I and I suspect a whole lot of other Canadians just want it to be done so we can all move on.
The most important thing that someone can do in a democracy is to vote. Don't forget . . . .
This is the Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada. I was in Costco yesterday and the aisles were stocked with Christmas crap. I've already seen two Christmas adverts . . .
We used to travel a lot at the beginning of October - the Thanksgiving holiday meant that one last vacation day was needed for Paul, generally the places we want to visit are less busy, and the temperatures are a bit more reasonable. AS a result, my facebook 'memories' are full of amazing trip pics these days!
